Self-Care Strategies for Counselors

Being a counselor is fulfilling, but it comes with its emotional tolls. Here’s a mixed bag of strategies I use to ensure I don’t bring the stress home.

End-of-Day Rituals: “Every day, before leaving my desk, I write down one success and one thing I could improve on. It helps me close the day with a sense of accomplishment and a goal for tomorrow.” — this little habit signals that it’s time to switch off from work mode.

The Drive Home: Turning my commute into a decompression chamber is essential. I alternate between energizing music and engaging audiobooks. It’s about making the transition from counselor to my personal life as smooth as possible.

Mindfulness Moments: Here’s a quick win—mindful breathing! Even a few minutes can act like a system reset.

  • Try This: Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, and repeat. Simple yet effective at melting away the day’s stress.

Journaling: Unload to Reload: Not every day is a breakthrough day. Sometimes, it’s about getting through. That’s where my journal comes in handy: “Reflective journaling in the evening helps me leave the professional ‘me’ on paper and not carry her home.” — Putting pen to paper is a powerful way to process the day’s challenges and triumphs.

  • Lean on Your Tribe:
    • Coffee with Colleagues: Sometimes a quick coffee break with a fellow counselor can make all the difference.
    • Professional Supervision: Regular check-ins ensure I’m not alone in this journey.

Prioritizing Me: I love unwinding with a bit of yoga or a walk. It’s about finding what recharges your batteries and making it a non-negotiable part of your day.

Mixing up these techniques helps me maintain my balance, ensuring I’m the best for my students when I’m on the clock, and the best for myself and my family when I’m not. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential.
